Title: Public Exhibition Space
Collaborative Interventions in Privately Owned Public Space (POPS)
Manhattan Downtown District 1.

Since 1961 the City of New York’s incentive zoning program has helped establish 3.5 million square feet of public space across Manhattan. For Conflux, Artists Meeting challenges the notions of public and private space, choosing Downtown Manhattan’s financial district as a geographic target area and destination for establishing creative dialogue with this concentrated community of residents, visitors and members of the public. Loosely based on Jerold S. Kayden’s book Privately Owned Public Space: The New York City Experience, Artists Meeting has superimposed its own psychogeographic understanding on POPS by locating the places and times when our interventions will occur. Each project will engage specific micro-communities from downtown such as, the workers, residents, homeless, immigrants, tourists, etc.

Brought together by chance, circumstance, and a common purpose, Artists Meeting members gather in person and via technology. Free of commercial influence, participants draw on each other’s expertise to refine concepts, further experimentation and engage each other in collaboration. Artists Meeting members participating in Public Exhibiton Space include Leesa & Nicole Abahuni, James Andrews, Noah Apple, Daniel Blochwitz, Eliza Fernbach, G.H. Hovagimyan, Thomas Hutchison, Christina McPhee, Mayuko Nakatsuko, Raphaele Shirley, Maria João Salema, Lara Star Martini,Abigail Weg, Lee Wells and Edita Zulic.
