Speculation Station

This project will take place Saturday, September 13, at 4:00 PM, in front of 236 Grand Street, Brooklyn. Participants should bring a used newspaper to the Speculation Station, which will be traded for rental on a mobile street kiosk.
Project Description::
For the subway project the Eh-Team aims to use construction and development as a vehicle for a speculative economy. The Eh-Team proposes the establishment of a subway station under construction. The Station will have the appearance of an intended future portal to the underground train system. It will be constructed entirely of rough 2×4’s, plywood and plastic construction mesh and industrial cardboard. The Speculation Station will establish a whole new gene pool of commercial activity around the new transportation hubs.
The station will be located on the periphery of an existing construction site. At the location of the proposed station there is an existing street-level basement entrance. The existing entrance will appear to be the stairs to a subway. By sharing a location with an existing site the station will gain a level of legitimacy without jeopardizing the integrity or function of the construction site itself. In an effort to control the commercialization around the new station, a kiosk dealership will be integrated into the station. As the actual train line has not yet been built, the kiosks will be offered on barter instead of a sales basis. The primary currency of the barter system will be used newspapers, enabling the kiosk dealership to double as a newsstand. The barter system gives rise to a process of disbursement as the trading brings the kiosks to new locations and extends the boundaries of the original project.
