Non-linear Harbinger Systems

Project Description::
For the installation at Centre for Architecture, CutUp will be installing a full sized billboard into the space, awkwardly wedged into one side. The billboard, hard to view from close up, will be viewed though a television monitor connected to a CCTV camera installed on the opposite wall.
The billboard is a reassembled advertisement poster - a poster that has been cut into 2400 pieces and remade into a new image - an image of a landscape devoid of spectacle, a ruined cityscape.

The installation comments upon both the placement of advertisements in the city and the close proximity to the viewer. By replacing an image of desire with an imagined end to spectacle, the installation enters into the subconscious realisation of the hyper-city as a veil lies over the ruins of the real. The viewer engages with this piece through a surveillance camera which converts the pixilated image back into a clear image - here the mediated image becomes truth; a way of viewing what appears to be a chaotic, pixilated contortion of an advertisement, itself a mediation.
