This outdoor installation will appear in the area around Conflux HQ for the duration of the festival.

Project Description::

“Ugly New York” is an alternative souvenir shop promoting ugly spaces in the city. We vend postcards, keychains, magnets and other products that will enable you to keep the real memory of New York and see what you’ve missed.

Mainstream postcards have been manipulating landmarks, monuments and city spaces, exaggerating its symbolic perfection and ignoring realistic elements. In every of the hundreds of souvenir shops in New York, what we can buy are the same digitally augmented monuments under the same dark blue sky. The New York City being sent out through postcards to all over the world share this generic image of unrealistic hyper-beauty.

We provide an opportunity that’s completely the opposite of mainstream postcards. We believe that ugly spaces – ugly in a sense that they will never make a perfect postcard are more valuable for city experiences. Ugly spaces are well underrepresented, yet sometimes very close to our favorite tourists’ spots on postcards. We present you the back of Time Square under construction, the down under of Brooklyn Bridge, the recovering Lower Manhattan in progress and many more “ugly” images we collected from the city.

Postcards will be postage ready on site at Conflux Festival, then available for sale online. We encourage you to send an Ugly New York postcard out to your friend to share the ugly flavor of the city.
