Music for Public Rail: L, 8 Ave to Canarsie/Rockaway Pkwy is a sound piece by Benjamin Chaffee for listening on personal headphones while riding the MTA L line. The modern urban soundscape leaves little of the sonic field free for humans to occupy. In a rural or more natural area, each organism communicates using certain frequencies leaving space for the sounds of the environment. In the city our entire sound field can be filled by events such as the passing of the subway or the movement of traffic. Music for Public Rail attempts to address our psychological relationship with the sounds of the train by offering another way to listen. Apart from re-designing our exterior world, how can we change our experience through adjusting the way we attend to it? How can we change our environment through the way we perceive it? This piece will bring attention to a process of examining our reactions, sensitivity and awareness of the places in which we live. During Conflux 2006 the piece will be available at the McCaig-Welles Gallery in Williamsburg, NY. iPods are available for check-out from the gallery. The piece will also be available on a computer at the gallery for download to individual mp3 players. The entire piece is available for free download at http://musicforpublicrail.com. |
