Have a Seat

Caroline Woolard

Benches are rare outside of parks, even in Williamsburg. I would like to provide public seating in an unused space by affixing at least ten different "seats" into the u-channel of the no parking and stop sign posts implanted in the sidewalk. Although more tangible than most psychogeography projects, I feel that this architectural intervention allows any pedestrian to experience the monotony of everyday life in a new way. Perhaps this small fissure in reality will open doors for the public to re-evaluate the status quo. Although my "Have a Seat" project may seem like three-dimensional graffiti, it is removable with the right chuck for the bolt that slides in the holes of the u-channel. People will see the seats and either sit on them or not, but I hope all people will enjoy resting while waiting for buses or friends. I am not interested in monuments that overpower people in scale and pretension, using ideas of transcendence (heaven) and immortality (eternal materials) to appear larger than life. Instead, my wooden chairs reveal history over time through repeated use as a gesture at the scale of the human body: anyone can dominate this object. A chair is submissive as both a functional object for rest and a platform for a new perspective on the environment that surrounds it. Anyone can rest without removing themselves from the reality of urban bustle and going to a picturesque park.
