DropSpots

What Is It? Drop Spots is a participatory event that takes place at street level. Facilitated by the web, Drop Spots initiates local community interaction by sharing individual creativity through a physical network of hidden "drop spots". How Does It Work? Using the existing landscape around them, whether it is urban or pastoral, participants look for places (Drop Spots) that they can hide a "gift" of no financial value that they want to exchange. This could be a photograph, a drawing, a letter, a flower, a CD: something made, found or bought. They then go to the Drop Spots website and map the location of their Spot. Other participants can then see that a new Drop Spot has been created, go to that location and take the "gift", replacing it with one of their own. What is our motivation? Drop Spots combines the virtual and the real. It uses the web to facilitate creative interaction among a local community, and interaction with our physical environment. Drop Spots promotes the exchange of gifts and ideas. It is highly accessible to those with only a basic understanding of the web. It brings the creativity of a community that is usually hidden by walls and doors out onto the street where it can be shared. It takes the idea of anonymous, easy sharing out of the domain of email inboxes, with their spam and mass mailing, and into a personal, local, physical realm. Imagine having a drop spot on your way to work. Imagine picking up a photograph, a quote, a question as a gift to speed you on your way. Imagine the fun of deciding what you choose to exchange next… Using the Google Maps API, we will build a website that enables participants to tag the locations of Drop Spots on a map, to describe the hiding place in words, and to upload photographs and comments about the favorite items that they have found so far. While upholding the anonymity of participants, people can express their gratitude by posting on the website.
