24 Hour Roadtrip

Calvin Johnson, Scott Knowles, Kurt Braunohler

The 24 Hour Roadtrip is an exploratory drift writ large, a macro derivé in the tradition of SI, William Least-Heat Moon, and the Merry Pranksters. The roadtrip will gather at McCaig-Welles Gallery on Saturday September 16th at 11am, depart shortly thereafter, and return exactly 24 hours later. The only stated objective of the journey is to hit all five boroughs within that time. We will be traveling by various modes of transportation and will make several stops to visit New York City roadside attractions, quirky and not. Potty breaks and pit stops will be included, too. The roadtrip will be open to everyone. PgPny (KB, CJ, SK) facilitates the trip, but does not direct its path or stops. We propose to leave McCaig-Welles Gallery with a core group of participants, understanding that some people will drop out, and others will join as we go along. We will plan stops where participants can join us en route, and we will set up a website where people might follow our pathway virtually, or plan to join us at an upcoming stop. We will also be in touch via cell phone and text messaging (information to be released shortly before event). At the end of the journey, we will present a 10-minute recap to an audience and then collapse on the floor. There is no limited number of participants - the length of the event usually determines a small number of comitted indivuduals. But feel free to join the trip for just an hour or for all 24. No advance contact neccesary - just show up at the start and come with energy and enthusiasm. No prior experience needed. We ran a 24 hour road trip two years ago and it was a great success that took us to Staten Island for pizza, deep sea fishing off Sheepshead Bay, to the Bronx for a Yankees game, and through many gallons of beer. One thing should be known however - this is NOT a guided tour of New York. This is a collaborative exploration and experience. We're sightseeing and enjoying ourselves, arguing with each other, pouting and not talking, experiencing those beautiful moments when you're only reason for existence is to travel - everything that makes up a good road trip. This is not a controlled experience - there will be good times, bad times, stupid times, boring times - everything. Feel free to hop on and hop off as you so desire. Please bring a little bit of pocket money as some activities may have incidental costs. Possible stops include: //// Staten Island: Jacques Marchais Tibetan Art Museum, Staten Island Mall, Snug Harbor Cultural Center //// Brooklyn: Canoeing on the Gowanus Canal, Brooklyn Brewery Tour, Green-Wood Cemetery, Sherman Street Block Party //// Manhattan: Gospel Mass, Abyssinian Baptist Church, Nap Pod at Empire St Bldg 24th floor [www.metronaps.com], Tai Chi in Columbus Park Chinatown, Little Red Lighthouse under the GW Bridge, Shoe Shine at Grand Central Terminal //// Queens: Horse Races at Aqueduct, Flushing All-You-Can Eat Buffet, New York Panorama [www.queensmuseum.org], //// Bronx: Pancake Breakfast, Gotham Girls Roller Derby, Shopping on Fordham Road //// Grab Bag: Target practice at a Firing Range, Russian and Turkish Baths, 3 am visit to a Porn Shop, Trip to a Junkyard, Game of Capture-the-Flag, Smoking Shisha at an Egyptian Café, Riding on the back of trash trucks, All-Night Jazz
