Scout: The City in Audio

Scout: The City in Audio is an urban broadcast, transmitting live audio from throughout the New York City. During Conflux 2006, Scout will be heard on unused FM frequencies. At that time, there will be many Scouts traveling throughout NYC, reveling in the experience of overheard conversations, the rumble of the urban jungle, the mayhem of Coney Island, and whatever else that comes up along the way. Each Scout will be sampling a different part of New York City. The "scouts" are transmitters in the form of cell phones, or cell phones in the form of transmitters (ok, they're just cell phones) released in the wild of the New York, always on, often in motion, and they tirelessly report real time news from the street. Their audio streams are received by the scout base camp (five receivers) and broadcast each stream on unused FM radio frequencies. The broadcast can only be heard within 200 feet of the Conflux, though the broadcasts will be available online after the event. Moving around the exhibit, visitors literally tune into the Scout broadcasts to experience another part of New York. For the Conflux, we will need a booth where we loan out 25 radio walkmans along with instructions on how to connect with the scouts. At our booth will be the Scout base camp, where several FM transmitters broadcast each experience. There can be an infinite number of people, though we have a limited source of equipment. We wil provide a handful (20 to 25) of walkman radios, though people should be encouraged to bring their own.
