| Clusterings is a piece about connection, literal and otherwise. Under the guise of a fictional company, I have invented an odd and not entirely necessary product called Clusterings - inflatable, wearable sculptures that allow temporary groupings of 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 people. The project is presented as a 'product demonstration', comprised of a short presentation, an instructional video, a question and answer period and a 'hands on' session where participants try on the devices. Participants are invited to go out 'into the world' and negotiate life as a group. The instructional video, in addition to a tedious presentation on how to use the markedly easy-to-use sculptures, shows various humorous situations such as: running around a track, trying to get on a bus, ordering ice cream, reading newspapers, etc. - mundane activities which become more compromised and difficult when attempted as a group. The piece debuted in Tokyo at Showa Konin Park during the Tokyo-SF Art Festival in August of this year. I collected video footage of the Clusterings being used on the Tokyo subway: entering the subway, buying tickets, going through the turnstiles, riding the cars. Each exhibition involves taking the pieces into the unsuspecting urban environment and recording some of the reactions of the public, thus grounding the piece in a particular public space. | |||||
